 Skippack, Pennsylvania

Skippack Real Estate has a Rich History

The area around Skippack was originally settled by German immigrants who farmed the area in the late 1600s. It was officially founded in 1702 with the name Van Bebber's Township. This area became two townships, one of which was Skippack. During the next 200 years, the town would grow, and in 1901, the Souderton, Skippack & Fairview Electric Railway was created to provide transportation in the area. Later, it would become the Montgomery County Traction Company.

The Township of Skippack has more than 300 years of settlement history, in addition to the Native American history that came before. It has played a role in the formation of the United States, in more ways than one, as General George Washington and his men camped at Skippack on two different occasions.

Skippack Real Esate Today

For many families, Skippack real estate offers an amazing way to invest in their future. With only about 3,000 residents, the township is able to maintain a small-town feel. The historic background of Skippack is complemented by the modern rush of nearby Philadelphia, which brings residents the best of the old and the new.

The largest industry of the area known as Skippack Village is tourism. The commercial real estate in Skippack Village is home to numerous antique shops, galleries, and restaurants. There are concerts and theatre performances year round. In addition, there are all manner of fun civic activities that take place in the community. Old fashioned fishing derbies, pie eating contests, and bake offs are just some of the events that get locals involved.

The Parks and Recreation Department offers activities, as well. Summertime is great for kids' camp, and 55-acre Palmer Park even offers outdoor fitness opportunities for those who want to get in shape. The town has a pool and residents are involved in everything from Little League to hiking the Perkiomen Trail. In addition, Skippack offers discount tickets on summer attractions all throughout the area, including the Baltimore Aquarium, Hersheypark, and the PA Renaissance Faire, among many others. More discounts can be found on lift tickets to areas like Bear Creek, Big Boulder/Jack Frost, Blue Mountain, Camelback, Elk Mountain, and more.

A number of the town's residents are also employed as a result of the nearby State Correctional Institute in Grateford. This facility was originally built in 1929 and is home to about 3,500 prisoners. It is the largest maximum-security prison in the state, and it provides jobs not just for guards and other prison personnel, but also in nearby businesses that provide goods and services to the prison.

The annual median household income for Skippack was estimated to be just less than $81,000 in 2007, representing a much higher-than average number than for Pennsylvania as a whole. Median home values were also reported to be much higher than average at about $274,000 for houses and condominiums. The average educational level of residents is also particularly high, with approximately 93% graduating high school, and nearly 38% having a Bachelor's degree or higher. There are several schools of higher education in the area, including Villanova University, which is located about 14 miles away from Skippack.
